  14. <p>    DIED. O. Edmund Clubb, 88, Foreign Service officer and old
  15. China hand whose 24-year career was destroyed in the 1950s by
  16. Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist witch-hunts;
  17. of Parkinson's disease; in New York City. As consul general in
  18. Beijing in 1950, Clubb hauled down the American flag on mainland
  19. China after the Communist takeover. His candid reports in the
  20. 1930s -- many of them critical of the U.S.-backed regime of
  21. Chiang Kai-shek -- later prompted a State Department loyalty
  22. board to portray Clubb as a security risk. Though he was
  23. eventually cleared, Clubb quit the Foreign Service.
